In the early 1900s, Manuel Pedro Sevilla Camus (son of Maxima Hizon Sevilla) successfully completed the Bureau of Printing’s six month apprenticeship program. The Bureau took him on as a junior craftsman and, in 1905, promoted him to craftsman. By 1917, his position title was Craftsman in Charge of Stores. In 1920, upon the retirement of Director Edward E. Gessler, he was appointed as acting Director. In July 1921, Manuel took early retirement; Pablo Lucas, who also started out as an apprentice, was appointed to the vacated position. Pablo, who had been sent to the US as a government pensionado to study printing, would later become the first Filipino to be appointed Director of Manila’s Bureau of Printing.
