Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as a Sergeant in Company B, 50th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravry at Port Hudson, Louisiana on July 4, 1863. His citation reads "Voluntarily exposed himself to a heavy fire to get water for comrades in rifle pits". His Medal was issued on November 2, 1895.

After the war Hanna served as the principal keeper of the Cape Elizabeth Light Station, located near Portland, Maine. On 28 January 1885 he rescued two men from the wrecked schooner Australia and for this action was awarded the Gold Lifesaving Medal. As such, Hanna is the only individual to have been awarded both the Medal of Honor and the Gold Lifesaving Medal.
