First full time Minister of the Goodwill Presbyterian Church.
Joseph, James and John Houston, three brothers, emigrated from the North of Ireland in the early 18th century. They came first to Jamestown VA. James remained near there, John settled in Pennsylvania, and Joseph, after preaching a few years at Jamestown moved north to Maryland. The Rev Joseph Houston served the Elk River Church in Maryland from 1724 to 1739. He then moved to Orange County NY where he was installed in 1739 as the first settled pastor of the Goodwill Presbyterian Church in the town of Montgomery NY. He died in October of that year. The Goodwill church was built in 1729 and remodeled in 1871 and still stands on the original site.
Joseph and his wife Isabella had two sons, James and Joseph, as well as four daughters.
