Biography

Margaret Rose (d c1703) was the elder daughter of Hugh Rose, 15th of Kilravock, Sheriff of Ross (b 01.1663, d 23.01.1732 and his first wife, (19.10.1683) Margaret Campbell (dau of Sir Hugh Campbell, 5th of Cawdor).

She married as his first wife, on 04 February 1701, to Sir John Mackenzie, 3rd Bart of Coul. He was the son of Sir Alexander Mackenzie, 2nd Bart of Coul (d 1702) & Jean Gordon (dau of Sir Robert Gordon of Gordonstoun).

Their child was

  1. a. (Jean?) Mackenzie m. (Robert) Bayne of Delny (d 1743)

She died before 1703, when he married Helen Murray. She had a younger 1/2 sister also called Margaret.


Notes

"Sir John Mackenzie, Baronet [S. 1673], of Coul, 1st s. and h. by 1st wife, b. in or before 1673 ; suc. to the 1715. Baronetcy in 1702; joined in the rising of 1715, and, not having rendered himself up to justice before 30 June 1716, was attainted, under the Act, 13 Nov, 1715.

He m. firstly, Margaret, da. of Hugh Rose, of Kilravock.

He m. secondly, in 1703, Helen (b. 27 Feb. 1683), 4th da. of Patrick (Murray), 3d Lord Elibank [S.], by Anne, da. of Alexander Burnet, Archbishop of St. Andrew's. He d. s.p.m. soon after 1715, the Baronetcy, by his abovementioned attainder in that year, having previously become forfeited."

Hugh Rose, 15th Baron of Kilravock and Chief of Clan Rose, (1663–1732) was one of the Scottish representatives to the first Parliament of Great Britain as MP for Nairnshire.[1][2]

Rose married, firstly, Margaret Campbell, daughter of Sir Hugh Campbell, 5th of Cawdor and Lady Henrietta Stuart, daughter of James Stuart, 4th Earl of Moray, on 19 October 1683, they had three children.

  1. Hugh Rose, 16th of Kilravock (died 1755), MP for Ross-shire.
  2. Margaret Rose (died 1703), married Sir John Mackenzie of Coul, 3rd Baronet, had issue.
  3. Mary Rose (died 1734) [sic: before 1717], married Duncan Forbes, 5th of Culloden, had issue.

‘’ His [Hugh Rose, 15th of Kilravock] first Lady was Margaret Campbell, eldest daughter of Sir Hugh Campbell of Calder and Lady Henriette Stuart, daughter of James Earl of Muray and of Lady Margaret Home, daughter of the Earl of Home. Kilravock married this Lady on the 19th of October 1683, and she died in the year ….. having brought him a son, Hugh, and two daughters, viz., Margaret, married to Sir John Mackenzie of Coul, and Mary, married to Mr. Duncan Forbes, Advocate, (and afterwards Lord Advo- cate, President of the College of Justice, and Laird of Culloden,) to whom she bore John Forbes now of Culloden.’’
