According to James Paterson (1847), Margaret Wallace here treated is the daughter of Robert Wallace of Dundonald and his wife Agnes Stewart. History of the County of Ayr, etc., Volume I, p. 291 Thomas Harrison Montgomery (1863) concurred. Genealogical History of the Family of Montgomery, etc., p. 135-36

Her Testament Dative

Margaret Wallace died intestate in July 1602. Her husband did not seek confirnation of her testament dative and inventory until 1613. The exact date upon which conformation was granted in not known, partly due to omission, partly to damage to the original document. However the opening paragrah can be clearly read. It follows: "The Testament Dative and Inventar of the guidis and geir perteining to umqle Margaret Wallace spous to Robert Montgomerie of Hessilheid wtin the parochin of beith quha deceissit in the moneth of July the yeir of god jajvic & twa yeiris ffaithfullie maid and gevin up be the said Rot in name & behalf of Margaret Montgomerie lawfull dochtir to the defunct and exectrix dative decrnit to her be decreit of the Comissr of Glasgw the ..... day of ..... the yeir of god jajvic [and thirteen] yeiris as the said decreit in the self at mair lenth proportis" [National Records of Scotland, Commissary Records of Glasgow, reference CC9/7/9 pp. 42-4]

Margaret was born about 1570, the daughter of Robert or John Wallace, 1st of Auchams & Dundonald, and Agnes Stewart of Minto [sic: an unknown woman]. Margaret married Robert Montgomerie, and they had sons Robert and Hugh, and a daughter, Margaret.
