Daughter of Sir Guy de Brienne, KG, Lord Bryan and Elizabeth de Montagu

Sir Guy de Brienne, KG, Lord Bryan married twice and had daughters he called Margaret by each wife. Married (1) Joan Carew, daughter of sir John Carew/Carreu. Children include Margaret de Bryan, married Hugh de Courtenay. Married (2) Elizabeth Montacute/Montagu. Children include Margaret, married John Erlegh.

John(VI) married Margaret, daughter of Sir Guy de Brien K.G. (who was standard bearer to King Edward III at Crecy) and they had:

four sons,

1. John(VII),
2. Robert,
3. Richard and
4. Philip,

and three daughters

2. daughter ll
3. daughter lll

John(VI) died in 1372, possibly a victim of the Black Death then sweeping the country, leaving John(VII) his son and heir [7][18].

Some of the families to whom these shields belong were certainly connected by alliance. The renowned Sir Guy de BRYAN, elected K.G. 1370 and summoned as a Baron to Parliament from 1350 to his death in 1390,* married for his second wife the lady Elizabeth MONTACUTE, daughter of William first Earl of Salisbury. On his well-known monument in the abbey church of Tewkesbury the arms of Bryan and Montacute are impaled. By the Lady Elizabeth he had a daughter, Margaret, the wife of Sir John Erlegh, who in 40 Edw. III. attended the Black Prince in his campaign in Spain, and was present in the battle of Naziers. Sir John Erlegh, his son, married Isabel daughter of Sir John Paveley,† and left one daughter, Margaret, his heiress, who was married first to Sir John de St. Maur; 2. to Sir Walter Sondes; and 3. to Sir William CHEYNEY. She died 21 Hen. VI.

In summary, it appears that Sir Guy de Bryan was born say 1309, he being in arms in 1327 and stated to be of age in 1330. His first wife, Joan, was living 12 April 1348. …

After the death of Hugh Le Despenser, his widow, Elizabeth de Montagu, married (3rd) before 10 July 1350 (as his 2nd wife) Guy de Bryan (or Brian), K.G., son and heir of Guy de Bryan, by Gwenllian, daughter of Gruffudd ap Lloyd. He was born about 1309. They had three sons, Guy Knt., William, Knt., and Philip.

Sir Guy de Bryan and his first wife, Joan de Carew, were the parents of at least two, possibly three daughters. There are living descendants through their daughter, Elizabeth de Bryan, who married Robert Fitz Payn (formerly de Grey), Knt., of Stogursey, Bridghampton, Cheddon Fitzpaine, Rodway, etc., Somerset.
