Sister Margrit (74), a member of the Society of Saint Ursula of Brigue (Canton Valais) was shot dead on 28th December 2005, at St Mary's Clinic, in Ngqeleni, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, where she served as a nurse and midwife.

Superintendent Nondumiso Jafta said Sister Margaret Branchen was sitting in her office when a gunman approached one of the cleaning staff and demanded money shortly after 14:00 on Wednesday. He then came to her office and opened fire, wounding her. The man then ran away, apparently empty-handed. Branchen was rushed to St Mary's Hospital in Mthatha, where she died.

"Sister Margrit had worked for many years in South Africa where the Ursuline Sisters of Brigue have six communities. According to the authorities the nun was killed during a burglary. (S.L.) (Agenzia Fides 9/1/2006".

Brief overview:

Sister Clementine (74), a Ursuline nun was shot dead at the order's premises in Ngqeleni, apparently by a young male robber. Ursuline Sister Clementine Brantschen, the order's movitiate superior, had just returned from her work at Ngqeleni Clinic on December 28 when she heard commotion and went to investigate, said Sister Magdalena Zenhausen, the Ursuline Sisters' regional superior. Sister Magdalena said Sister Clementine found an intruder holding a firearm and demanding money from Angelina Sinyanzi, a domestic worker. Sister Magdalena said that after Sister Clementine handed money over to the intruder Sinyanzi sounded the security alarm and rushed out of the novitiate to alert other domestic staff.

Father Octavious Khosoane, a local parish priest, and other staff stationed nearby heard gunshots as they ran to the house, Sister Magdalena said. They saw the intruder, a young man of about 21, fleeing, and then found Sister Clementine, who had been shot in the head.

Sister Clementine was rushed to a private clinic in Umtata, where she was declared dead.
