Golden Era: May 1929 as told in the BUSS book. Nebraska Tragedy Parents of One of the Victims Was Well Known in Golden “A press dispatch from Stratton, Nebraska tells of a horrible crime which is of special interest to the people of this vicinity, because one of the victims, Elmer Frerichs, was the son of Martin Frerichs and wife Emma Buss, formerly of Golden, Illinois. The following are the particulars:”
STRATTON, NEBRASKA - Charles Doetke, 55, wealthy landowner near here, ended his life Monday after he killed a stepson and shot two other persons as the result of marriage difficulties and the sale of some straw. Henry Parde, 25, was brutally murdered by Doetke and Mrs. Henry Parde and Elmer Frerichs, a nephew, were taken to the hospital suffering from wounds. Elmer Frerichs later died.
The trouble is said to have started first between Frerichs and Doetke over the sale of some straw some time ago. This difficulty was believed to have been settled, but later trouble with his wife, who left him, prompted the killings. Mrs. Doetke is believed to be in Beatrice, Nebraska. In the separation agreement she was given $7500. Doetke armed with a revolver and a shotgun, first visited the Frerichs farm northwest of Stratton. After a brief argument, Doetke shot Frerichs in the head and the chest.
Continuing his fiendish trip Doetke went to the home of his stepson, Parde and demanded to Mrs. Parde that she return his wife to him. He then shot her twice through the forehead with his revolver. When she regained consciousness, Mrs. Parde took her 13-month old baby and went to the neighbors for help. Doetke went to the field where Parde was working with a tractor and fired four shots at Parde. Pretending he was dead, the wounded man fell from the tractor. Doetke then returned to his car, but seeing that Parde had crawled to a clump of trees, the enraged man returned to his fallen stepson and placed the gun against his head and fired.
Doetke then went home and standing before a mirror, he fired a shot from his revolver through his head and was killed instantly. (end of transcription)
