About Marie E. Stewart

The Mass of the Resurrection for Marie E. Stewart was celebrated Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lewiston. The Rev. Joseph Schmidt of Moscow was the celebrant and Deacon Don Stewart, son of the deceased, assisted.

The vigil service, led by Deacon Fred Schmidt of Lewiston, was held Friday.

She was born May 5, 1918, at Greencreek to Edwin and Mary Terhaar Stolz, and died Aug. 28, 2001,at Good Samaritan Village in Moscow.

Marie, a longtime Lewiston resident and teacher, was a member of the first graduating class from Greencreek High School in 1938. She received a teaching certificate in 1940 from Lewiston Normal School and later a bachelor's degree in education from Lewis-Clark State College.

She taught primary grades one through eight at Fairview District School near Grangeville from 1940 to 1944.

Marie married M. Don Stewart on Nov. 25, 1943, at Grangeville, and they made their home in Marysville, Calif., where she taught at the Brofey School District near Marysville. She worked two summers in San Diego for Consolidated Aircraft during World War II.

She moved with her family to Lewiston in 1946. Marie taught at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School from 1959 until its closing in 1970.

She enjoyed reading, embroidery, crochet, travel and providing care for children and the elderly. Marie was a past member of Catholic Daughters and Our Lady of Lourdes Altar Society. She was named Catholic Mother of Year, was a Cub Scout leader and Camp Fire leader and was active in PTA, and was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include M. Don Stewart, her husband of 57 years at the family home in Lewiston; a son, Don M. and wife Becky Stewart of Casper, Wyo.; two daughters, Alene and husband Glen Olson of Corvallis, Ore., and Rita Blewett of Kendrick; one sister, Nellie Matthews of Boise; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild

The youngest of 13 children, Marie was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters and one grandson.
