Nellie Mathews - Hooks

Nellie Mathews, 90

Nellie Mathews was born in Cottonwood to Edwin and Mary Terhaar Stolz on April 22, 1916. She passed away Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006, in Boise, at the age of 90.

She attended schools in Cottonwood and Greencreek, and later worked for many families in the area. She went to Elk City and cooked in various places before moving to Yakima to work in the fruit industry.

There she met and married James Hook. He died in 1961 and she went to Tacoma as a cook and housekeeper for Fr. Larry Lillenborg. After his death, she worked as cook and waitress in a restaurant and there met Homer Mathews, a long-distance moving van driver. They were married Aug. 9, 1975, and she moved to Fort Worth, Texas. She traveled with him many times to various parts of the country. He died Feb. 26, 1994, and in June of that year she moved to Boise, remaining there until her death.

She was the last surviving member of the Edwin and Mary Terhaar Stolz children, and is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place and services will be held at a later date in Greencreek.
