SIR MARMADUKE BECKWITH

     born 1687 Aldsborough, Yorkshire ENG, son of Sir Roger BECKWITH and Elizabeth JENNINGS. He died 1780. Married 1716 to Elizabeth (BROCKENBROUGH) DICKERSON, daughter of William BROCKENBROUGH and Mary NEWMAN. She was the widow of Thomas DICKERSON who died 1714/15. Marmaduke BECKWITH was grandson of Sir Edmund JENNINGS and Margaret BARKHAM.

Sir Marmaduke Beckwith, 320, born at Aldborough, Yorkshire, Eng., in 1687; emigrated to Virginia in 1700; he was County Clerk of Richmond Co. from 1708 to 1748; it is probable that he died at the latter date.

   324. Sir Jonathan of Virginia 

325. Mary; married Lawrence Butler, born in England and was a major in the Revolutionary Army, and who died in 1811, leaving one son, Beckwith Butler.
326. Rebecca; married Major John Belfield.
327. Marmaduke.
328. Elizabeth; married Joseph Morton, an Englishman, and had one son, William Jordon, who married Martha Pryor and had twelve children.
329. Tarpley; born in Virginia; and died in England, November 7th, 1748.
Note: Some published genealogies claim that Rebecca Beckwith married Maj. John Belfield (1751-1792), but Marriages of the Northern Neck of Virginia 1649-1800 show that Maj. John Belfield married Mary Beckwith, daughter of Roger Beckwith and Winifred Miskell. This Rebecca Beckwith would have been abt. 22 years OLDER than Maj. John Belfield, making that supposed union unlikely.

An amusing 1765 legal dispute between Marmaduke Beckwith, Clerk of Richmond County, and Thomas Jones, Clerk of Northumberland County has been published in the William and Mary Quarterly, Series 1, Vol. 23, pages 259-260. ( A copy is in the manuscript As I Have Been Told.) Perhaps the son Jonathan named a son for the grandfather.

   Fairfax Harrison's Early American Turf Stock, volume 2, pages 53 and 54, says - 'Because no record was made of his breeding while he was on the turf, Pick, duly noting his age and turf form, gave him the coat and breeding of Larkin's Tom Jones, b. c. 1743 (not 1745) by Crofts' Partner, of which a full record had been made by both Heber & Pond. The consequence was that GSB (i, 216), entering the Larkin colt among the produce of his dam, was led astray by Pick and gave him the date of the Carr colt'

   Fairfax Harrison's Early American Turf Stock, volume 2, page 54, says - '[Tayloe's] Tom Jones [br. c. 1758] was bred by Col. John Tayloe of Virginia: he was got by Sir Marmaduke Beckwith's horse of the same name (that was the property of Mr. Carr, he won a King's Plate and some Fifties)' also '[Beckwith's] Tom Jones was got by [Carr's] Cyprus: his dam by Mr. Crofts' Bloody Buttocks Arabian' also 'To these testimonies for breeding is added the Rappahannock River tradition (recorded in 1826 by Advocate in AF, x, 71, No 18) that the Tom Jones imp. by Sir Marmaduke Beckwith 'in the year 1755' was a gr. c.'

THIS INDENTURE made the twenty sixth day of November in the Eleventh yeare of the Reigne of our Sovereign Lady Anne by the grace of God of Great Brittaine France and Ireland, Queen defender of the faith &c,, and in the yeare of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and Twelve Between JOSEPH BELFIELD of Parish of Sittenburn in County of Richmond within the Dominion of Virginia of one part and MARMADUKE BECKWITH of the Parish of Farnham in the County aforesaid of other part; Wittnesseth that JOSEPH BELFIELD in consideration of the summe of Five shillings of lawfull money of England to him in hand paid by MARMADUKE BECKWITH, and for diverse other good causes and considerations him (hereunto moveing hath granted bargained sold and to farms Letten unto MARMADUKE BECKWITH & assigns all that tract of land containing Five hundred Fifty and five acres be the same more or less lying and bieng in the Parish of St. Marys and County aforesaid; above the FALLS of RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER, (the said Land was granted unto said JOSEPH BELFIELD by Deed from ye Proprietors Office dated the twenty third day of February one thousand seven hundred and Four, and bounded. begining att a marked white Oake standing on the South East side of a Branch of aforesaid River, known. by the name of DEEP RUNN, the said white Oake is a corner tree of a great Tract of Land surveyed for Collo: ROBERT CARTER Esqr., from ye said white Oake running down the said DEEP RUN South eleven degrees West four hundred sixty four poles, thence South East two hundred poles to a red Oake, thence North fifty degrees East ninety six to another red Oak, thence North one hundred and nine poles to a dead Oake being a corner tree of the aforesaid Great Tract of Land, thence along a line of ye said Great Tract two degrees East, two hundred ninety four poles to a Hickory corner tree, thence along another line of the said Great Tract North West one hundred ninety poles to the first mentioned station with all houses orchards together with the Royalties of hunting hawking fishing and fowling and mines minerals and queries and all other at/vantages profitta and appurtenances belonging, To have and to hold the demised premises unto MARMADUKE BECKWITH assigns during the full terme of one whole year paying therefore yearly on the tenth day of December to JOSEPH BELFIELD or assigns one Graine of Indian Corne if lawfully demanded to the intent that by virtue of these presents and of the Statute for transferring uses into possession, said MARMADUKE BECKWITH may be in actuall possession of ye premises and may be thereby the better enabled to a grant or conveyance of ye reversion and inheritance thereof; In Wittnesse whereof said JOSEPH BELFIELD bath hereunto sett his hand & Seale ye day and year above written Sealed and Delivered in ye presence of JNO: TAYLOE JOS: BELFIELD Au a Court held for Richmond County ye third day of Decembr: 1712 JOSEPH BELFIELD came into Court & acknowledged this his Deed to MARMADUKE BECK- WITH & it was admitted to Record Test M. Defender of the faith &c., Between RICHARD DOGGITT and ANN his Wife of Pish: of Northfarnham and County of Richmond, which said ANN was the only Daughter of THOMAS ASCOUGH of County of Richmond, of one part and MARMADUKE BECKWITH of the Pish, of Northfarnham and County of Richmond on the other part; Witnesseth that RICHARD DOGGITT and ANN his Wife in consideracon of the sum of Five shillings Sterling to them in hand paid by MARMADUKE BECKWITH, the receipt whereof they doe hereby acknowledge, bath and by these presents cloth bargain and sell unto MARMADUKE BECKWITH all that parcell of land containing by estimacon One hundred acres /be the same more or less/ scituate in Pish: of Northfarnham and County of Richmond and bounded; Beginning at a marked Oak near the Southernmost corner of LUKE THORNTONs Plantacon. down and along said THORNTONs Foot Path to the County Road, thence up the Road to the line of MEGHUE BARRETT and soe bounded on all other parts by the bounds of the Patent which this land goes to the North and North East lines of the said Patent, which Patent was granted to Collo. JOHN WALKER for Nine hundred acres of land dated the twenty seventh day of September one thousand six hundred sixty seven; Also one other parcell of land which lyes in the Patent containing by estimacon Fifty acres /be the same more or less/ Beginning at a Sandy Valey in the County Road, up the County Road S. S. West to the head of a Branch, thence down the Branch to the Main Swamp, thence up the Swamp to the mouth of the Sandy Valey, the first menconed One hundred acres of land was by one BRYAN HODGSON and MARY his Wife sold to CHRISTOPHER ASCOUGH, Grandfather to said ANN DOGGITT, by Deed acknowledged in RAPPAHANNOCK County Court the fourth day of May one thousand six hundred and eighty seven: the other Fifty acres was by said HODGSON and his Wife sold to JOHN ELES and LEWIS FARDO by Deed acknowledged in RAPPAHANNOCK County Court the fourth day of May one thousand six hundred eighty seven: Together with all houses orchards priviledges and appurtenances to the same belonging; To have and to hold the land and premises unto MARMADUKE BECKWITH his heirs during the term of one whole year paying therefore the rent of one Ear of Indian Corn on the Birthday of our Lord God next ensueing if lawfully demanded to the intent that by vertue of these presents and by force of the Statute for transferring uses into possession MARMADUKE BECKWITH may be in the actual! possession of the premises and thereby enabled to accept a release of the inheritance thereof to him and his heirs; In Witness whereof RICHARD DOGGITT and ANN his Wife have hereunto sett their hands and seals the day and year first above written At a Court held for Richmond County the first day of November 1727 RICHARD DOGGITT and ANN DOGGITT came into Court and acknowledged this their Deed unto MARMADUKE BECKWITH the said ANN being first privately examined which was admitted to Record Test M.
