Funeral Service Held Today for Martha V. Curtis

Funeral services for Martha Vernon Curtis, 74, are being held this afternoon (Thursday) at 1 p.m. in the Vernal LDS Third Ward Chapel.

Mrs. Curtis died Sunday at 11:40 p.m. at the home of a son Martin W., of causes incident to age.

She was born August 14, 1880 in Blaine, Lawrence County, Kentucky, a daughter of William and Cynthia Moody Vernon. Her parents were converts to the LDS Church and the family moved to Vernal when she was eleven years of age.

She was married to Carl Curtis on April 18, 1904, in Ft. Duchesne. The couple lived on a small farm west of Ft. Duchesne for several years and then moved to a farm in Glines. From Glines they moved to Bingham Canyon were Mr. Curtis was employed by Kennecott Copper Company. They were later divorced and Mrs. Curtis moved to Salt Lake City where she has lived for the past thirty years.

She became ill eighteen months ago and has been living at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Martin W. Curtis, Vernal, for the past eight months.

Survivors include two sons, Martin W., Vernal and Carl A., Copperton and three daughters, Mrs. Aage (Lois) Mortensen, Salt Lake City: Mrs. H. E. (Merle) Loader, Orland, California; Mrs. Martin (Mable) Barrus, Portland, Oregon. There are also fifteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and two brothers, Andrew Vernon, Vernal and Tom Brown, Baggs, Wyoming.

Burial is in the Maeser Fairview Cemetery.

Funeral Service Conducted for Martha V. Curtis

Funeral services for Martha Vernon Curtis, 74, were held last Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Vernal LDS Third Ward Chapel under the direction of Bishop Samuel B. Wooley.

Prayer at the home was offered by Louis A. Timothy. The opening song, "Sometime We'll Understand," was sung by a double mixed quartet, comprised of Robert Ufford, Pat Stewart, Alice Wooley, Elizabeth Sowards, Byron Goodrich, Golden Bastian, William B. Wallis and Chellus Caldwell, accompanied by Mable Stagg.

Opening prayer was offered by Nathan Hardy, followed by a duet, "Does The Journey Seem Long," by Chellus Caldwell and George C. Davis, accompanied by Mable Stagg.

Speakers were Dr. Ray E. Spendlove and President Archie Johnson with remarks by Bishop Wooley. George C. Davis sang, "My God and I," and Mrs. Wooley, Mrs. Ufford and Mrs. Stewart sang, "Softly and Tenderly." Closing prayer was offered by Joseph C. Price and the grave in the Maeser Fairview Cemetery was dedicated by Bishop Ernest Johnson.

Pallbearers were Clayton Curtis, a grandson of Mrs. Curtis and nephews, Lloyd Richards, Alton Vernon, Leslie Thacker, Marvin Vernon and Charles Palmer.

Mrs. Curtis died Sunday, January 20 at 11:40 p.m. in the home of a son Martin W., of causes incident to age.
