Martha James Lewis (Colvin) was born on July 17, 1819, in Culpeper, Virginia, USA, Culpeper, Culpeper County, Virginia, United States. Her parents were James C. Colvin and Martha Polly Colvin.

Martha married Alfred Brown Lewis. Together they had the following children:

• Mary Columbia Lewis;
• Lizzie Lewis;
• Frances Lancaster (Lewis);
• Martha Jane Lewis.

She died on January 16, 1855, in Miami, Saline, Missouri, USA, Saline County, MO, the United States from Childbirth and was buried at The Miami Cemetery.

Please note: Many people confuse Alfred's wife's middle name as Jane, as per family records and genealogist research her correct name for her mother was Martha James Lewis (Colvin) - James being a family surname. They named a daughter Mary Jane Lewis for a cousin Jane Ashby Smith who was visiting the family assisting with the birth and other children when Martha James Lewis (Colvin) died in childbirth - the baby was named Martha for the mother with the middle name of Jane. Jane Ashby Smith became the 2nd wife of Alfred Brown Lewis.
