One interesting character born in this old cottage(see picture), was President Marthinus Prinsloo, the son of Johannes Cloppers’ older sister, Maria, and her husband, Willem Prinsloo de Oude, who were living on the farm at the time. Marthinus Prinsloo was a colourful character, who, in 1795, “over-threw” the Landdrost and established himself as the President of the Republic of Graaf-Reinet. This was short-lived and Marthinus was arrested by the British, who had taken over the Cape (under the pretext of preventing the French from doing so during the Napoleonic wars). Following the Treaty of Amiens in 1802, the Cape was returned to the Dutch and Prinsloo freed!
