Her parents Thomas and Mary were settlers in the eastern part of Long Island which was under English rule, during the early period when western Long Island was under Dutch rule as part of New Netherland; Thomas had a land grant in Southampton (founded in 1640) on Long Island in 1659 and moved to E. Hampton 1663[1]
In July 1682, her father, recorded as Thomas Diament, deeded his land to his son James, with provisions for daughters including Hanah Bird. This is evidence for her married name. She has sometimes been asserted to be the wife of Andrew Bordt (anglicized name Andrew Bird) of Newtown, Long Island, New York, but he was married to Marie Broucard. In a 2007 article, Hal Bradley suggested that James Bird was probably her husband. The name of James Bird appears in East Hampton records between 1673 and 1694. A court record from East Hampton describes the conviction of "James Bird and Hannah his wife" on 13 June 1673 for fornication. They were "Convicted of their own Confession for in contynencie before Marriage" and fined 40 shillings. Although a conviction for fortification suggests a pregnancy, no children of this couple have been identified.[2]
