About Mary Cubberley

  • Mary Pearson was reportedly the daughter of *Robert Pearson and *Katrin Pearson of Nottingham Twp., old Burlington Co., NJ (now Hamilton Twp., Mercer Co.), and the wife of James Cubberley. Proof of these connections--i.e., the links seen below--is needed.
  • The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey 33:11 gives her death date as 12 Feb. 1772 and her age as 82. However, the year is given as 1770 in a modern monument listing the burials.

"Mary was born about 1689/90. She was the widow of James Cubberley, who died in 1754, and was named co-executrix in his will. She made her own will on 10 Mar. 1770, then a resident of Nottingham Twp., where she is presumed to have died.

Note: Her gravestone gives her death date as 12 Feb. 1772 and her age as 82. Her probate records show that her estate was inventoried a week later, on 19 Feb. However, the death year is given incorrectly as 1770 in a modern monument listing the graves here.

Mary is identified in online family trees as a daughter of Robert (Sr.) and Katrin Pearson, both buried here. Considering Mary's estimated birth year and the fact that her remains were laid to rest in this location, the possibility that she was connected to the Pearson or Tindall families cannot be ruled out. However, no mention of a daughter is made in the 1704 will of Robert Pearson Sr., nor is a daughter mentioned in the 1715 will of widow Catherine (Katrin) Pearson. While it is conceivable that Mary could have been omitted from the mother's will if she had already received her inheritance, it is near impossible to imagine that she would not have been explicitly provided for at the age of 14 in Robert Pearson Sr.'s will, if she were his daughter.

Genealogist Charles R. Hutchinson, a descendant and local historian who made a very thorough study of this family, stated very simply in his 1917/19 manuscript Pearson genealogy that Robert Sr. and Katrin had only one child: Robert Jr. Thus the maiden name and links previously shown in this memorial have been deleted. Cubberley and Pearson descendants should consider any reference to her being the daughter of Robert and Katrin Pearson as purely speculative and highly unlikely.

Further, Mary's husband James Cubberley is shown as "James Stelle Cubberley" in his memorial, linked below, and in family trees online. The inclusion of Stelle as a middle name is undoubtedly an addition by modern genealogists. Middle names were extremely rare among the English during James's lifetime, and his signature and contemporary references to him do not include a middle name or initial.

Finally, 22 June 1754 is not documented as James Cubberley's death date (despite it being shown as such in his memorial). Rather, this is the date on which his estate was inventoried."
