The surname of John's Sweet's wife is unknown. She has been identified in some family trees and publications as a sister of Stukely Westcott, but no reliable evidence confirms the relationship. According to Anderson and others, her birth surname is unknown.[1]
Family
Married:
- by about 1628 to John Sweet (d 1637)
- by about 1638 to Rev. Ezekiel Holliman (d 1679)
Children:
- John b say 168 d 1677 Newport RI. Married Elizabeth.
- James b say 1630 d 1698 Warwick RI. Married Mary Greene.
- Meribah, b say 1632; later called Renewed; d 1681 RI. Married John Gereardy.
Mary's Holliman's will was dated July 31, 1681. She left her Rhode Island property to her daughter Renewed and son-in-law John Gerearty.
Notes
- Mary, widow of John (1) married a second time the Rev. Ezekiel (HOLLIMAN) and after their marriage, her new husband changed her daughter's name from Maribah to Renewed.
- After the death of HOLLIMAN, 17 Sep. 1659, Mary SWEET HOLLIMAN returned to Salem where she died 31 July 1681. The death of John SWEET (1) and the subsequent marriage to Ezekiel (HOLLIMAN) doubtless hastened their removal to Warwick, known at the time as Shawmuch.
- She was no doubt a sister of Stukeley WESTCOTT, the immigrant ancestor of that family. Her daughter, Meribah (Renewed) [Holliman] GEREARDY claimed to be cousin to Amos WESTCOTT, Stukeley's son. Also, both families moved at the same time from 1) Salem, MA to 2) Providence, RI to 3) Warwick, RI. [NB: no proof]
- Mary's second husband Ezekiel was a congregant of Rhode Island founder Roger Williams and they followed him to Providence. On July 1, 1639, they were named on a list of ten baptists identified by Rev. Hugh Peters of Salem as "those who have such noted as disobey the truth," who had received "the great censure" of his church, "wholly refusing to hear the church, denying the churches in the Bay to be true churches."
