About Mary Oliver
Circumstantial evidence suggests she may be Mary SHINE, daughter of Major Daniel Shine and Elizabeth GREEN.
One point against: Mary SHINE is not mentioned in her father Daniel Shine's will of 1757 and may have died before him. Mary ____ OLIVER died in 1794.

I’ve been looking for evidence to prove the identity of John Oliver’s wife Mary (1727-1794), thought to be MARY SHINE, daughter of DANIEL SHINE and ELIZABETH GREEN.
There is still no direct evidence that Mary Shine (daughter of Daniel) was Mary, the wife of John Oliver. There is, however, a lot of circumstantial evidence and a couple of published genealogies from 1912 and 1969.
Online messages:
I’ve seen internet messages going back to 1999 stating that John Oliver married Mary Shine, most likely the daughter of Daniel Shine. According to Florence Fulford Moore, a fellow descendant, John Oliver was a privateer who came to New Bern County from England.
Glenda Turck's Rootsweb tree from 2004 shows the same genealogy.
Published books:
A book published in 1912 (“Carolina and the Southern Cross”), states that John Oliver married Mary Shine, and lists some of their children, but not parents for either of them. It’s not well-organized.
http://www.forgottenbooks.com/readbook_text/Carolina_and_the_Southe...
The pages for Daniel Shine and Elizabeth Green and for John Oliver and Mary Shine at the “Our Family Tree” website (Ray Gurganus’ site) cite a book from 1969: Some Colonial and Revolutionary Families of North Carolina, Volume II; Marilu Burch Smallwood; Volume II Published by the Author, 1969. The book is not online, unfortunately.
Would you believe it is 295 bucks on Amazon, not including shipping?
I don’t know if her book is considered reliable or not. This is the website that cites the book:

Documentation:
Alas, there’s nothing definite here, but the circumstantial evidence is compelling.
Daniel Shine does not mention most of his daughters by name in his will.
However, John Oliver was an executor of the will of Daniel Shine in 1757, along with Daniel’s son James (b 1731):
“And I make and order my hole and sole Executors, James Shine and JOHN OLIVER, Revoaking and Disanulling other will and Legacies before maid by me.”
http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/craven/wills/shine04.txt
John Oliver was also a major purchaser at Daniel Shine’s estate sale (making fourteen purchases, some listed under the name John Olivour).
http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/craven/wills/shine01.txt
John Oliver was an executor of James Shine’s will in 1761. Perhaps the James Shine who is a son/executor of Daniel Shine (though the Geni profile of James, son of Daniel shows him dying in 1801--no documentation; needs to be confirmed). Both wills (Daniel Shine, James Shine) mention James’s brothers Thomas Shine and William Shine.
http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/craven/wills/shinewills.txt
John Oliver was also a witness to a codicil to his brother-in-law Francis Stringer’s 1753 will, “lodged in the hands of Daniel Shine Esqr.”
Francis Stringer married Mary Shine’s sister, Hannah Shine. The will names as executors Daniel Shine, James Greene, and Thomas Graves.
http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/craven/wills/stringr2.txt
John Oliver was witness to the 1760 will of Francis Dawson, along with Thomas and William Shine—possibly the same two men mentioned in the Daniel Shine and James Shine wills.
http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/craven/wills/dawsoncollw.txt
John Oliver’s will (dated 1766/probate 1776) was witnessed by William Shine and William Green. (It’s not clear whether William Shine is the same one mentioned in the previous three wills, and it’s not clear who William Green is, but the Greens were part of the Daniel Shine family via his wife Elizabeth Green Shine.)
http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/craven/wills/oliverwills.txt
John Bryan (husband of Elizabeth Oliver, daughter of John Oliver and Elizabeth Shine) had his will witnessed by Thomas Shine—it’s not clear whether he is the same one from the other wills. (The other two witnesses were family--Crispins. John Oliver’s sister Sidney married a Crispin per his will.)

So we have a book from 1912 saying John Oliver married Mary Shine, we have the wills of Daniel Shine and members of his family showing John Oliver as if he is a family member, and we have son-in-law John Bryan's will witnessed by members of the Shine and Green families.
