Mary was the daughter of Edith Paul. She married Rev. William Sampson about 1852, and they raised thirteen children together during their fifty years of marriage. Her younger sister, Amanda, married William's younger brother Edward.

Mary's youngest sister, Effy Ann Paul Locklear, is buried at the Christian (Locklear) Cemetery in Saddletree, NC, but Effy's birth year on her headstone should be closer to 1843 according to the 1850 Federal Census.

Several of their children became well respected and prominent citizens of Robeson County, North Carolina. Their son Everett Sampson was a charter member of Deep Branch Baptist Church, son Henry H. Sampson was a well respected Pembroke merchant, and son Rev. Oscar R. Sampson served as chairman of trustees of the Pembroke Indian Normal School (now University of North Carolina at Pembroke or UNC-P) and Sampson Hall at Pembroke State College (now UNC-P) was named in his honor in 1949, and son Willie Foster Sampson, Sr. was an educator and my great-great grandfather.
