About Robert Otis Sampson
Rob was the youngest son of Rev. William and Mary Paul (also seen as Dial on Federal Censuses) Sampson. He married Maggie Chavis on Jan. 6, 1901 in Robeson County, North Carolina. He married Lizzie Graham on Dec. 26, 1908 in Robeson County, North Carolina. At the time of his death, he was married to Anna Bell Locklear.
The following was taken from the Feb. 9, 1949 edition of THE ROBESONIAN:
Robert Otis Sampson, 70, died this (Wednesday) morning at 1:10 at his home in Lumberton, R. 4, Deep Branch section, after an illness since last June.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. from Deep Branch Baptist church of which he was a member, with Rev. Tommy Swett, pastor, in charge, assisted by Rev. Z. R. Chavis. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Sampson was a son of the late Rev. and Mrs. William Sampson of the Deep Branch section. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Anna Bell Locklear Sampson, and the following sons and daughters; Howard of Lumberton, R.1, Ed and Joe of Lumberton, R. 4, Roy Lee Sampson of Pembroke, R.1, Mrs. Susie Locklear and Miss Winnie Jane Sampson of New York, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Locklear of Lumberton, R. 4, Mrs. Jessie Locklear of Lumberton, R. 1, and Miss Florence Sampson of the home; two brothers, Foster Sampson of Pembroke, R. 1, and James Sampson of Lumberton, R. 4.

Funeral services were held for Robert Otis Sampson on Friday afternoon at Deep Branch Baptist church; where he had retained his membership for many years. Rev. T. M. Swett, pastor, assiested by Rev. Z. R. Chavis, was in charge of services. Burial was in Deep Branch Cemetery.
At his death, Mrs. Sampson was a member of the board of trustees at Pembroke high school and a former superintendent of the Deep Branch Sunday school. He was a native and lifelong resident of Robeson county spending most of his life in the Deep Branch section, where he was born.
He was the father of nine children: Howard of Lumberton, R.1, Ed Macy and Joseph of Lumberton, R. 4, Roy Lee of Pembroke, R. 1, Mrs. Susie Locklear and Miss Winnie Jane Sampson of New york, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Locklear of Lumberton, R. 4, Mrs. Jessie Locklear of Lumberton, R. 1, and Miss Florence Samspon of the home.
Pallbearers were Willard Sampson, Burrel Locklear, Lackey Sanderson, J. B. Scott, Razier Strickland and John Luther Jacobs.
Flowerbearers were Hattie Sampson, Leslie Hunt, Sadie Hunt, Cattie Sampson, Annah Hunt, Minnie Graham, Elsie Locklear, Mary Jane Scott, Annah Sampson, Cammie Lowry, Mag Locklear, Mary Locklear, Ella Mae Oxendine, Nola Sampson, Zelma Jones, Annie Strickland and Maudie Hunt.
Mr. Sampson's friends were numbered by his achievements. The many floral offerings attested the high esteem in which he was held by the people. His christian character can be briefly stated as follows: Character as an inward state--love, joy, respect; character in expression toward man--long suffering, gentleness, goodness; character in expression toward God--faith, meekness, temperance.
