Biography

The wife of John Wilcox of Hartford was Mary; she was not Mary Farnsworth. Mary was born say 1588 in England, and survived her husband, who died in 1651, seventeen years. Her will was dated October 4, 1666, and she died about 1668 in Hartford, CT.

Mary _____ was born in England. Her surname and parents are unknown.[1]

She and her husband John Wilcox were original settlers in Hartford, Connecticut by 1639.[1]

When John died in 1651, he provided for his wife Mary.[1]

Mary Wilcock made her will dated 4 Oct 1666, making bequests to her "Cosin" (grandaughter) Sara Long; daughter Ann "Haul"; and son in law John Bidwell (also named executor).[1] Overseers were Deacon [Richard] Butler and James Ensing, who also witnessed the will. An inventory of the estate of Widdow Wilcock of Hartford was taken 1 Jan 1668 and valued at £40. 0. 4, including money owed her by John Haul and John Deming. Her estate had debts of £5.13.0.[2]

Mary was still living 27 Oct 1667 when the court ordered her son John to pay her £6 per year, since her weakness did not allow her to occupy the "Old House." She probably lived with daughter Bidwell.[1]

Origins

A recently indexed marriage record for John Wilcox and Mary Wylsher, 12 Oct 1615, in Terling,Essex,England, is a good fit given what we know. Unfortunately we don't know enough. We don't know where John was from. So far no subsequent baptisms of children have been located in the same area on 12 October 1615 to Mary Wylshyre, daughter of George Wylshyre and Philippa Thurgwood.
