Biography

(John1), born in England, perhaps about 1620 or earlier, certainly not later than 1620, died at Middletown, Conn., 24 May 1676; married first, at Hartford Conn., 17 Sept. 1646, Sarah Wadsworth, born in England, about 1626, died at Hartford, probably at the birth of her daughter in Oct. 1648, daughter of William and Sarah (Talcott) Wadsworth; married second, at Hartford, 18 Jan. 1649/50, Katharine Stoughton, probably daughter of Thomas Stoughton of Windsor; married third, after 1660, Mary (Lane) (Long) Farnsworth, who died at Middletown in 1671, daughter of William Lane, and widow of Joseph Long and of Joseph Farnsworth, both of Dorchester, Mass; married fourth, at Middletown, Conn., about 1671, Esther Cornwell, born at Middletown, May 1650, died there 2 May 1733, aged about 83, daughter of Sergt. William and Mary ( )Cornwell. Esther (Cornwell) Wilcox married second, in 1677, John Stow, born at Charlestown, Mass. (recorded at Middletown), 16 June 1650, died at Middletown, 30 June 1732, in his 83rd year, son of Rev. Samuel and Hope (Fletcher) Stow.

He removed to Middletown, Conn., before 1655, since on 4 May of that year, called at Middletown, pailmaker, he mortgaged land to Thomas Hosmer of Hartford, for 30 pounds, which he had bought from Hosmer; the mortgaged was released 29 Mar. 1664.

The will of William Wadsworth of Hartford, dated 16 May 1675 (inven) whom he gave twenty shillings. On 18 Sept. 1660 John Willcock gave to "my daughter Sarah willcox ye child that I had by my first Wife my house and Home lott at Hartford..this is left in ye hands of her Grandfather William Wadsworth dureing her minority"l if she die under age unmarried, the property is to revert to "my Two Eldest children, that is to Say John & Thomas." The land was entered as belonging to "Sarah Willcox ye daughter of John Willcox late of Midle Towne." Immediately beneath is entered "Land...belonging to Thomas Long," including "one percell of land which he Bought of his father John willcox," recorded 2 Jan. 1681.

The will of William Lane of Dorchester, Mass. made 28 Feb. 1650/1, proved 6 July 1654, named his daughter, Mary Long. By her first husband Joseph Long, she was the mother to Thomas Long who married her stepdaughter, Sarah Wilcox, also of Joseph Long, Jr., of Dorchester, who died 26 Aug. 1676. For her second husband, and as his second wife, she married Joseph Farnsworth of Dorchester, who in his will made 2 Jan. 1659/60 provided for his children and for his wife Mary and her children Joseph and Thomas Long. By him she had a son, Samuel Farnsworth, who settled in Windsor, Comm., and for his first wife married, 3 June 1677, Mary Stoughton, daughter of Thomas Stoughton and presumably neice of John Wilcox's second wife. Mary Willcox of Middletown, in her will dated 3 Apr. 1671, proved 7 Sept. 1671, gave to her son Samuel Farnsworth, 10 (pounds) out of her land in Dorchester, the remainder of the land to her husband, John Willcox, to son, Joseph Long, the bill she had of him for the purchase of the land; to Mary wilcox, some clothing; to Sarah Long, the bed and bolster already in her house in Hartford; witnesses; John Hall, Ann Hall (her mark).

The inventory of the estate of John Willcox of Middletown was taken 6 June 1676 by Richard Hall and John Kirby and amounted to 409.00.04 pounds. the children were named as Sarah Long, aged 28; Isreal, 20; Samuel 18, Ephraim 4; Hester 2 in Dec. 1675; and Mary born 9 Mar 1675/6. Distribution was ordered to the three sons and two daughters. A later distribution, dated 3 Jan. 1694/5, but probably signed earlier by some of the heirs, names Israel Wilcox, Samuel Wilcox, Ephraim Willcock, Easter Willcock, and Mary Willcock; signed by Joseph Hand Sen. in behalf of the wife of Joseph Hand Jr.; Sarah Willcock (by mark); Ephraim Wilcock; Mary Wilcock (by mark); Esther Wilcock; Esther Stow (by mark); Samuekl Wilcock; and Joseph Hand. Esther Stow (alias Wilcox), the administratirx, asked for acceptance of this distribution, 6 Dec 1726, and was discharged because of her age and informity; and as land had been laid out to the Estate of John Wilcox and hence not inventoried, administration was granted to Francis Wilcox of Middletown and David Ensign, Jr., of Hartford.

John Wilcox, b. in England, came to Hartford with his father, but rem. to Middletown Upper Houses, where he d. May 24, 1676/ He agreed to settle in Middletown, but failing to do so promptly the General Court in 1653, voted to compel him to occupy his grant or find a substatute. On Mar. 10, 1657, he purchased the homsteads of Joseph Smith and Matthias Treat, who were returning to Rocly Hill part of Wethersfield, but after combining these into one homestead, he sold to his cousin, Samuel Hall.

In 1659 he was on the com. on roads and on June 30, 1660 was given lands at Wongunk. It has been claimed that he rem. to Dorchester for a few years. On Nov l, 1665, Thomas Hubbard sold to him "one house where J Wilcox occupieth" and three acres of land therewith. Thomas Hubbard had already built near the corner of what are Pleasant and South streets, and the condition of his grant of 1663 was that she should not sell "till he doth inhabit four years," and so John Wilcox must have purchased and built before Nov. 1, 1665. These three acres have now what is known as the Beaumont-Hanmer House.

John Wilcox had bargained for seven acres in the rear of his homestead and had received from the town a grant of three acres in the rear of these seven. Hubbard must have been in financial straights as indicated by John Crow's getting possession of some of his land, which his heirs and the treasurer of the Colony deed in 1686 to Thomas Ranney, who proceeded to locate his two oldest sons, Thomas and John thereon. Hubbard had sold his homestead to Isaac Johnson, who had come from Roxbury. Wilcox had died. Then Isaac Johnson deeded to Esther Wilcox, widow of John, as executrix of his estate, the ssven acres aforesaid, retaining twelve acres which he soon sold to John Clark, who had married Elizabeth White, dau of Capt. Nathanil.

John Wilson married four times: (1) Sept. 17, 1646, Sarah Wadworth, who died 1649-50, dau of William Wadsworth, who left one child; m. (2) Jan. 18, 1650, Catherine Stoughton, dau of Thomas Stoughton, of Windsor who built the Stone house of fort seen herewith; m. (3) Mary, widow of Joseph Farnsworth, of Dorchester and before that the widow of ___ Long; she d 1671; m. (4) Esther Cornewell b May 1650 dau of William Cornwell. She m: (2) John Stow of Middletown and died May 2, 1733.

• John Wilcox, of Hartford and Middletown, had for his first wife Sarah Wadsworth, and her sister m. Thomas Stoughton, Jr. Wilcox m., second, Catherine Stoughton, sister of Thomas S. and dau. of the Thomas Stoughton, Sen., who went from Dorchester to Windsor. Catherine had many relatives living in Dorchester, and her last child was born in Nov., 1658. Probably she died soon after, and John Wilcox m. a third wife Mary, who died in 1671.
