Master William Montgomery of Stane, formerly Mr. William Montgomery of Grenefield, is the seconf son of Hugh Montgomery, first Earl of Eglinton and his wife Lady Helen Campbell. The Scots Peerage III: p. 436

Mr. William Montgomery of Grenefield, who in terms of a contract dated 20 January 1507-08, married Elizabeth Francis, elder daughter of Robert Francis, Laird of Stane, and they had a charter for the lands of Stane on 22 January 1508-09. In 1522 William Montgomery was infeft by his father in the lands of Dreghorn. They had issue Arthur, who succeeded, and Hugh, who as Hugh Montgomery of Auchinhude, styles himself as son of Elizabeth Francis, Lady of Stane, who was then still alive on 21 March 1554-55. Master William Montgomery of Greenfield married Elizabeth Francis, the eldest daughter of Robert Francis of Stane: "Rob. Francys domini de Stane . . . . . filie sue naturali uxorique dicti Wil". RMS: 3381

22 January 1508: Charter by which Robert Francis of Stane confirms that he has given his lands of Stane, Sanctbridiskirk, and Bourtrehill, to his bastard daughter Elizabeth and her husband, Master William Montgomery of Greenfield. 3 June 1540: Charter by which James V King of Scots confirms that he has granted the ten pound lands of old extent of Stane in the bailliery of Cunningham to Arthur Montgomery, son and apparent heir of William Montgomery of Stane, and his wife Margaret Fairlie.
