January 1549: Extract from the Book of the Consistorial Court of Glasgow of disposition by William Muir of Glanderstone, brother german to John Muir of Caldwell, in favour of Patrick Montgomery and Agnes Mure, his spouse and the longest liver of them two and the heirs gotten of their own bodies whatsoever of the twa part of the property of the lands and lordship of Giffyn with all profits belonging to him as assignee of unquhile John Montgomery, son and heir of unquhile Sir Neil Montgomery of Langschaw, knight who had the gift thereof from the Queen and the Lord Governor for the space of 5 years after the 9th day of November then last past; which was the entry of the said Patrick and Agnes his spouse, to the said lands and profits of the same; reserving to Margaret Frissell, Lady of Giffen her reasonable terce and conjunct fee of the said lands Dated at Glasgow and registered 27 March 1549 National Records of Scotland, Papers of the Montgomerie Family, Earls of Eglinton, reference GD3/1/1/30/20

The first Earl of Eglinton Hugh Montgomerie third Lord Montgomerie died 1545 having married Lady Helen the daughter of Colin the first Earl of Argyll Their third son Sir Neil Montgomery married about 1500 Margaret the daughter and heiress of Quintin Mure Laird of Skeldon Their son Sir Neil Montgomery II of Lainshaw married Jean, the daughter of John and Grisel (Betoun) Montgomery.

Sir Neil Montgomerie of Lainshaw, was the ancestor of the present lineal male representative of Montgomery ; the Lainshaw branch being heirs male to the representation of the family, and also to its estates and titles, on the death of the fifth earl, but which latter were settled by that earl, under a new charter procured by him for that purpose, on the children of his aunt, Lady Margaret Montgomerie, Countess of Winton.
