The West Virginia White’s, of which Maston White is part of, were first mentioned in The "History of Logan County" was written by Henry Clay Ragland in 1896. The biography tells about John White, grandfather of Maston, arriving in Logan, in around 1830, settling on the Cole River. John and his wife, Susannah Marcum, raised a family of hardy men and women. His son, John “Jack” White, father of Maston, served in the American Revolution.

The family’s roots are said to actually go further back in American history, rumored to have been Peregrine White, a Pilgrim, and the first child born in the New World.

Maston was part of a family of which 12 children are known. Maston lived on Mill Creek when he built his first wife, Anna “Annie” Sampson / Sansom, a 2 story cabin, according to Brandon Kirk, who interviewed Eve Adams, in 2002. Annie was the mother of his first 3 children. As the story goes, Annie ran out to the fields, while Maston was plowing away during a rainstorm, to give him a coat (?) so he wouldn’t get sick. Her actions saved her husband's life, but proved to be fatal to her. Within a short time, she took ill and died.

By 1847, Maston married again. This time, Susan Niece / Neece / Neese. Susan was born in Rockbridge, Virginia. Some say she was ½ Indian, though I have found no evidence substantiating this claim. However, I do know that she acted as a midwife and received 25 cents for each birth she recorded with the county. She and Maston had 11 more children.

Maston died in 1883, at the age of 69. Susan lived another 14 years, briefly marrying (1889-1890), then divorcing a much younger man.

Please note, the birth dates are not always accurate, even if they appear on tombstones. However, I will use them along with the US Census to determine a more accurate date.
