Solomon, Maurice (1828–1873)

It is with unfeigned regret we learn the demise of Mr. Maurice Solomon, brother of Mr. C. Solomon, of Cooma, which sad occurrence took place at Bombala on Wednesday night last. We are confident that this intelligence will be read with sincere regret by all our readers, and by the people of the district in general, as the deceased was well known to all on Manaro, and had been identified with the district for a great number of years; having in fact come to Manaro when but very young. For some years, Mr. Maurice Solomon had been engaged in pastoral and mercantile pursuits in Northern Queensland. Upon his return to Manaro, he took an interest in the reefs at Bendock (Victoria), and was, we believe, the first enterprising person who introduced machinery on to that field. Success, unfortunately, did not attend his speculation, and he then came to Cooma, and took up, with some others, a mineral selection at Cootralantra, on which a copper lode was discovered, and is turning out an excellent property. We believe the late Mr. Maurice Solomon was not more than 38 or 40 years of age, and leaves a wife and family to mourn their heavy loss, whom, we are sure, will meet with the kind sympathy of all Manaroites in this, their heavy bereavement. The deceased was one of those energetic speculative men the district could ill afford to lose, particularly at the present time, when his experience as a practical miner, gained on many fields in this and adjoining colonies, would prove of so much value to his companions and fellow-men in developing the mineral resources of this district. The late Mr. M. Solomon, by his unassuming manner, his urbanity of temper, and kind disposition, had gained numerous friends on Manaro, and wherever he was known, all of whom will read with regret the announcement of his decease.
