About Solomon Saul Solomon, Free Settler "Britomart" 1835

Solomon, Solomon (Saul) (1820–1900)

from Hebrew Standard of Australasia (Sydney)

The death is announced of Mr. Solomon Solomon, of Eden, Twofold Bay, as having occurred at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. David Moses, "Elstrie," 186 Forbes-street, Darlinghurst. The sad event follows the death of Mrs. Solomon by a few days, and no doubt the bereavement after 60 years of wedded life and the long journey necessitated by the funeral hastened the end, remembering the deceased was in his 79th year. Mr. Solomon was widely esteemed and respected, and leaves four daughters, three sons and numerous grand children to mourn their loss. Mr. Solomon was a brother of Mrs. L. W. Levy, who is at present on a visit to Liverpool, England. The death of a good citizen is a public calamity, the death of a pious man is a direct loss to the Community. Little did we think when announcing the death of Mrs. Solomon, in our last issue, we should so soon be called upon to chronicle the demise of her good husband which occurred on the 12th inst., and within six days the two funerals had taken place. The late Mr. Solomon Solomon died at the age of 79 years, within two months of celebrating his Diamond wedding. Full of years, highly respected and deeply honoured by an ever increasing number of friends, he passed to a higher and brighter life, hand in hand with his faithful wife, to the throne of his Heavenly Parent, blessed in his last hours by the ministering care of his daughters and grand-daughters who stood around his bed and heard his last awe inspiring words which were, "How beautiful are our prayers," and passed away without a struggle or a pang, to Life Eternal. He was justly called and known as the King of Eden" for everyone looked up to him for advice and help, and cheering hopeful words fell from his lips and inspired hope and comfort. He was one of our oldest Magistrates, member of the Land Board, Returning Officer, and head of every public function that has taken place in the Eden district for the past thirty years. His public life was faultless and commanded the deepest respect, the poor and unfortunate loved him as a father and the influential vied with each other to do him honour. As a member of the Jewish Faith, he was a staunch supporter of religion, in the face of all difficulties, his place of business was kept closed on Sabbath and Holy days, his home was the sacred temple of domestic worship and every sacred observance was carried out in minute detail. Happiness, contentment and affection reigned therein and two beautiful lives have ended leaving for all time an example behind them of how good people can live and should die.
