About Mayer Schnee

Born in Zolochow (Zlocha, Zolochiv) in Austria-Hungary in 1866, where he received a traditional Jewish education. After marrying Basia Zwibel and having three sons (of whom only Moshe Aaron survived), Mayer immigrated to the US in 1894. He established himself as a carpenter soon after arriving and was joined by his wife and son in 1895. In New York City they completed their family, with Sadie (Sarah), Hannah, Nettie, Benjamin, and Jeanne.

His company specialized in building staircases. He became the president of the Erster Zolochower KUV in 1908 and remained so at least through 1918. He lived on East 3rd Street from at least 1910 until his death.

His grandson Armand remember Mayer Schnee being successful. This may be correct as the 1930 Census listed him owning his own home.

His epitaph says in Hebrew:

HERE LIES OUR BELOVED FATHER, THE CROWN OF OUR HEADS, AN UPRIGHT MAN WHO WORKED FOR JUSTICE, MAYER SON OF MOSHE ARRON, DIED 7 SHVAT 5692.
