Biography

Mehitable May was the great-granddaughter of John May [1] who, as part of the Great Migration, brought the May family name from England to Boston in 1635. [2]

She was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts on February 27, 1703, the daughter of John May and Prudence Bridge [3]

Some sources give her birth year as 1702, but, since this would place her birth fewer than 9 months after the date given her older brother, 1703 seems more likely. Some sources spell her name Mehetable, and there seems no way to determine which spelling she used.

On June 6, 1734 in Roxbury she married John Bowen, the son of John Bowen and Hannah (Brewer) Bowen. [4] [5]

The birth of Mehitable's first three children; Mehitable, John and Penuel; are documented in Roxbury Vital Records. Joshua's and Samuel's birth are not found in any known official records. Joshua, however, is proved her husband John's son in various original documents. Samuel's sonship can only be inferred from various circumstances and documents. See each child's profile for details.

Although no sources can be found documenting Mehitable's death, we can infer that she died some time between 1773 and 1778. She was still living on 6 January, 1773, when she signed a deed with her husband. [6] In March 1788, a few months before his death, John Bowen conveyed property to his son Joshua, but since his spouse did not join in the conveyance to renounce her dower rights, as would have been customary, it is likely that Mehitable was by then deceased. [7] There is no reason to doubt that she died in Roxbury.
