About Mercy Fish
THE GROTON AVERY CLAN, Vol. I, by Elroy McKendree Avery and Catherine Hitchcock (Tilden) Avery, Cleveland, 1912. p. 344
Jesse and Mercy Taft Fish moved to Williamstown from Floyd, NY in 1830. During the first decade of his life in Williamstown, Jesse was quite successful. In 1832 he was appointed Commissioner of Deeds for the town. He purchased tracts of land in 1833, 1835, 1836 and 1937. Jesse also served a Town Clerk, Justice of the Peace, and in 1839, was Town Supervisor. Mr. Fish operated a tavern about a mile west of the village from 1837 to 1858. He bought more land in 1850, 1853 and 1856. Jesse and Mercy were parents to nine children - two sons and seven daughters. After his death at age 75 in 1861, Mercy continued to live in the homestead with her youngest daughter until she died in 1878. Both are buried in the original part of the Williamstown Cemetery.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Feb 4 2019, 18:39:37 UTC
