Short biography: In October 1944 we left Latvia by ship from Liepaja to Danzig. After spending 8 years in various refugee camps , our family settled down in Weilheim, Bavaria, in 1952, where I could finally start a normal school education, which had been rather patchy up to then. After passing my school-leaving examination in 1962, I joined the Bundeswehr for three years as a volunteer and afterwards took up my studies of English philology in Münster, Westphalia, in 1965. In 1973 I entered upon my teacher's career at Königin Mathilde Gymnasium in Herford, Westphalia, which continued until 1993, when we - my family not objecting - decided to return to Latvia. I spent the last seven years of my working life at a secondary school in Valmiera teaching German. Since my retirement I've been enjoying the tranquil life of a pensionary in a rural cottage near Valmiera. As my wife's second great grandmother Liese Keks (born 1811 in Lauwatte, Kaagjärve) is Estonian, I am keenly intent on investigating these roots. Stimulated by that connection, I've started learning Estonian. But - Iga algus on raske.... .
