About Minerva Adaline Blalock

Decatur Daily Review, 2 Jan 1908, pg. 9:
Mrs. Minerva Blalock died at her home here at ten minutes after midnight last night after a short illness. Her husband David Blalock is in a critical condition and not expected to live. Mr. Blalock is 87 years old and his wife was 79. Both have been in the best of health wand were able to get about town readily until about a week ago when both became ill with what seemed to be grip. There are no hopes for the recovery of Mr. Blalock. Mrs. Blalock would have been 80 years old in another month.
The couple were married in North Carolina Oct. 1, 1846. They moved from that state to Macon county in 1850 and have lived here ever since. For many years they lived on a farm near Mt. Zion, moving to town eight years ago. Mr. Blalock was born in Mitchell County S. C. Oct. 6, 1820. His wife who was Miss Minerva Phillips was born in the same county. Mr. Blalock was a volunteer in the Mexican war, serving as a private from Feb. 14, 1847, to the close of the war in the First North Carolina regiment. His brother Tilman was captain of his company. After the war Mr. Blalock purchased from his comrades twenty-one Mexican land grants and in search of government land, he rode on horseback from North Carolina to Iowa in 1849. Failing to find anything to suit him he returned home. When he and his wife came to Macon county the next year, they drove in a two horse wagon. They settled two miles west and one south of Mt. Zion. Mr. Blalock's first purchase of land there was 160 acres for $1.60 an acre. He accumulated between 800 and 900 acres around Mt. Zion, which he two or three years ago divided among his children.
Six children were born to the couple four of whom are now living. These are Mrs. Sarah M. Wilson of Arkansas; Mrs. H. S. Scott, Mt. Zion; Mrs. H. Ritter, Mt. Zion and David Blalock, Jr. There are nineteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Mrs. Blalock was a member of the Methodist church in Mt. Zion.
According to a description of the funeral published in the 6 Jan 1908, edition, Mr. Blalock died and there was a double funeral on Sunday morning at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church with interment in Mt. Zion Cemetery.
