About Muriel Ethel Wells
As the eldest child of the family, and as a girl, and as her mother (Florence) had difficult pregnancies, Muriel was expected to help at home (they did also have one or two maids). Sister Winnie was “delicate” too. Muriel particularly looked after her two brothers (Eric & Harold) as they were a lot younger. Muriel was a good cook, dress-maker and housewife. 1891: 24 Station Road, Willesdon, Middlesex (with parents, sister & 2 servants). 31 March 1901: 34 Nicoll Road, Harlesdon, Willesden, Middlesex (with parents, sister, 2 brothers & 1 servant); For secondary education, Muriel attended St Albans Girls’ High School (incl being a pupil teacher there), and afterwards the Teachers’ Training College at Cambridge (for 1 year). Muriel enjoyed tennis and cycling. The Mellersh family had a season booking of a tennis court in Clarence Park [laid out in 1894] in St Albans, used especially by themselves, the Hughesdons and the Chubbs. Muriel’s hobbies were gardening and reading. For some years, Muriel was a teacher, at a girls’ boarding school [name?],at Rippingale, Bolsover Road, Eastbourne, East Sussex (including the 1911 census on 02 April, age 27). Muriel returned home to St Albans during WW1 and worked in Westminster Bank, becoming a cashier [previously only men served at the counter]. Muriel married in 1918 (age 35). During her life, Muriel lived in at least: Fulham & Harlesdon, London; St Albans, Hertfordshire; Eastbourne, Sussex; St Albans again; South London; Kingston-on-Thames; and Malmesbury, Wiltshire.
