There is no uncertainty in the birth record for Capt. William Henderson, of Fordell. However, there were multiple William Henderson and Margaret Bruces born in Scotland in this period. Therefore, it is not clear that this William was the father of Ens. John Henderson, of Augusta County, Lt. James Henderson, of Augusta County, William Henderson, of Augusta County and Samuel Anderson, of Augusta County.

DNA of a known descendant of Samuel Anderson, of Augusta County does not match the known male line of Sir John Henderson of Fordell. Further, there are no records in Scotland of the birth of any of the four known sons of William and Margaret Bruce.

WILLIAM HENDERSON was born 30 April 1676 in Scotland, and died 01 August 1737 in Scotland*.

The name of his first wife is unknown**, married abt. 1698, she died before 1705.

He married (2) MARGARET BRUCE 07 February 1704/05. She was born 01 March 1679/80.

(*Note: some sources have claimed in error that William Henderson died on 1 Augusta 1757 in Augusta County, Virginia, which is incorrect; there is no record of a William Henderson's will or estate records in Augusta County during that time period).

Child of WILLIAM HENDERSON and first wife (**Note: some sources, without specific information, have identified her as Grissel Russell) is:

  1. WILLIAM HENDERSON, b. Abt. abt. 1699, Scotland; d. Bef. September 1770, Augusta County, Virginia (date of probate in Augusta County). Married Susan Logan

Children of WILLIAM HENDERSON and MARGARET BRUCE are:

  1. JOHN HENDERSON, b. 9 February 1706, Scotland, d. 1766. Married Rose Finley.
  2. JAMES HENDERSON, b. 17 January 1708, Scotland, d. 1784. Married Martha HAMILTON.
  3. BRUCE HENDERSON, b. 10 May 1710, Scotland, d. Sept. 1719, Scotland.
  4. SAMUEL HENDERSON, b. 28 November 1713, Scotland, d. 1782, Augusta County, Virginia. Marred Jane Leeper.
  5. Thomas Henderson Est 1715 - Abt 1786. Married Dorcas.
  6. JEAN HENDERSON, b. September 1719, Scotland, married a Stuart, d. March 1729/30, Scotland.

Note: Thomas Henderson, born abt. 1715 is missing from this list and overlooked in many accounts of this family, but is probably also a child of William Henderson, Sr. and Margaret Bruce. Thomas received a patent from William Beverley adjoining that of his half-brother, William Henderson, Jr. in Beverley Manor on 20 February 1738/9.

It is unlikely that the John Henderson who married Rose and died in 1766 in Augusta Co is the same as any John born in Scotland. The immigrants to Augusta Co were Ulster Scots. I have seen no evidence that Capt. William moved to Ulster. If this exists, I would love to see it. Also, Samuel and William of Augusta Co were definitely not children of the Fordell line as proved by DNA. So connections to William are incorrect if this is the William born out of wedlock to Sir John in 1676. Also that would have made William 10 years old when he sired John.

Finally, the name Samuel is not used in Scotland to any extent in this period. So the brother Samuel implies Ulster where the name was common.

Finally, the will of John husband of Rose in Augusta has only one son, William and multiple daughters.
