Private User noted in 2017:

”My own tree, researched in the 1920’s by my great aunt, looked solid for 12 generations, but only 7 are real. My first American ancestor was Samuel Henderson b. 1713. He is attached by everyone to William Henderson and Margaret Bruce, but that is a false connection. William and Margaret are real, but they didn’t have the sons who came to America. The reality seems to be that he was born in Ulster, though no records have been found for it. The DNA suggests he was from a line of lowland farmers who were part of the Ulster Plantation after leaving Scotland in the 1600’s. These people left no real records behind. ...”

Was he a brother of Ens. John Henderson, of Augusta County?

Family

Samuel HENDERSON (William26) was born about 1715 and died about 1782 in Augusta County, Virginia. He married Jane Henderson (HUTCHISON, THOMPSON, LEEPER) who was born about 800 in Augusta County, Virginia.

”I am a descendant of Samuel through his son John Andrew. While most published genealogies list his parents as William and Margaret (Bruce), we know that William was son of Sir John Henderson of Fordell. My DNA has been tested and proves conclusively that this parentage is incorrect. Samuel was descended from Lowland Scot farmers from the area south of Glasgow. We believe his ancestors moved to Ulster in the Ulster Plantation. While the fathers name may well be William, he was not the William who was a son of Fordell. As Administrator of the Henderson DNA Project, I have confidence in this conclusion. We have a small group of Henderson men who are genuinely descended from Fordell, but we currently have 12 men out of over 400 for whom this is true. The father may indeed be named William based on the frequent use of this name in the family.”

Children of Samuel and Jane Henderson were:

  • i. William HENDERSON (Samuel24,William26) died 1804 in Lincoln County, Kentucky
  • ii. David HENDERSON (Samuel24,William26)
  • 52 iii. James HENDERSON (Samuel24,William26)
  • iv. Alexander HENDERSON (Samuel24,William26) was born about 1733. He married Jane UNKNOWN
  • 53 v. John Andrew HENDERSON (Samuel24,William26)
  • 54 vi. Samuel HENDERSON (probably this) (Samuel24,William26)
  • vii. Rebeccah HENDERSON (Samuel24,William26) was born 1749 in Augusta County, Virginia
  • viii. Sarah HENDERSON (Samuel24,William26)
  • 35 ix. Florence HENDERSON (Samuel24,William26)

Some records show that Samuel married Jean Leeper born in Ireland. The fact that the wife's name varies implies he remarried, his second wife being from VA. Also, the marriage date of 1747 is after the birth of this children.

All published genealogies show Samuel as born in Scotland in the Fordell Henderson line. However, DNA results prove this cannot be true. There is also no record of the birth in Scotland. It seems highly probable that he was born in Northern Ireland to a farmer. Research is needed to identify where. The birthdate is probably accurate since it comes from old family records. His father could even be named William, but clearly not the Fordell William
