About William Henderson, of Augusta County

Evidence needed to connect as son of Capt. William Henderson, of Fordell & Grizzel Russell

Disputed origins

“William Henderson's first wife was thought to be Grizzell Russell and she was the mother of his eldest son William who married Susan Logan, in America but not in Tennessee (there was no Tennessee at the time). William's son William was also born in Ireland.”

“We now have clear DNA evidence that Samuel Henderson and his brother William Henderson b. 1699 could not be descended from Sir John of Fordell. This means that the connection to William [of Fordell] that is so commonly cited as above cannot be correct. The name William was so common in both Scotland and Ulster that it is possible the father's name was William. And the use of William as a given name for children in these families suggest this may be true. But there cannot be a connection to William and Margaret Bruce.”

“DNA and surname analysis using the Origenes method indicates that this line originated in the Scottish Lowlands, south of Glasgow. The male line also includes men named Patterson, Allison, and Ellison.”

“I am a descendant of Samuel Henderson and Administrator of the Henderson DNA Project. The Project has the DNA signature of the Fordell line based on a known descendant of the line.”

The Henderson Family of Augusta County, Virginia

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I had Henderson ancestors also on my father's side of the family. This family was located for many years in Augusta County, Virginia, near Staunton. They were members of the Tinkling Springs Presbyterian congregation. I have been in communication with Dr. Horace G. Loftin, Clan Genealogist of the Clan Henderson Society and am hopeful that I will in time discover the necessary documentary evidence to link William Henderson (number 3 below) with the Hendersons of Fordell, Scotland. The only question is whether William (number 2 below) was the father or uncle of William (number 3 below). The link is clearly within the same family group.

Note: other sources have William Henderson's birthdate as abt. 1699, which appears to be more likely, based upon his father's birthdate.
