Nathaniel was born in Floyd County, Kentucky the son of Benjamin Howard and Nancy Adams and the grandson of William Howard and Molly Salyer. On July 20, 1857 he married Martha Ann Arnett the daughter of Wiley Arnett and Elizabeth Sizemore. Nathaniel and Martha Ann's children are; Harris Howard, Garrett Howard-1861-1865, Calihan Howard, Harriet (Howard) Minix, Elizabeth (Howard) Davis, Doctor Galen Howard, Proctor Howard, Bernard Blackburn Howard, Lulie (Howard) Minix Deam Arnett and Bertha "Pet" Howard.
