Biography

Pomfret was originally settled by citizens from Roxbury including Nathaniel's uncle and first cousin of the same name. The uncle was awarded 16 acres on the east side of the vale bounded on the west by the highway on plot 48. This acreage was later increased to thirty. The area was originally called New Roxbury, then Pomfret and in 1690 the main settlement changed to Woodstock. His property was in the Southwest District near Bungay Brook. He received colonial land for military services.

Following the burning of Schenectady, New York in February 1690 by the French and Indians in 'King Williams War,' he served as a Lieutenant of Militia under Captain Andrews in the Canada Expedition against Montreal led by the son of the Governor of Connecticut. Records show Town Meeting Attendance July 2, 1687, Representative to Pomfret General Assembly in 1720, and a 'lister' on the Killingly Town Assembly on November 25, 1728. He signed the list of the local 'Established Church' on January 28, 1730.
