About Nathaniel Massey
John Massey Sr., Nathaniel's father, operated the Tavern Ferry and a small inn for travellers for twenty years. In 1711, a year after John Sr. died, John Jr. "conveyed unto his brother, Nathaniel, the grantor's interest in half of the ferry from Salem, in partnership with Roger Haskins." (Essex Deeds, Bk. 23, Pg. 8)
It is unclear how long Nathaniel operated the tavern and the inn. It is clear that there was pressure from the townspeople in Salem to build a bridge and do away with the Ferry. When the pressure started in earnest is not clear, but it culminated in the construction of the Salem-Beverly Bridge in 1788, many years after Nathaniel took over operations.
