NATHANIEL MORTON Nathaniel "came to New England with his father in 1623 on the Ann; upon the death of his father in June, 1624, he was adopted by Governor William Bradford, whose second wife, Mrs. Alice (Carpenter) Southworth, was Mrs. George Morton's sister; that benevolent man gave his nephew the care which by the early death of his father he was denied, and he received an education which fitted him for the great work he afterwards accomplished for the colony; he was made a freeman n 1635."

"In 1645 Nathaniel Morton was elected clerk, or secretary of the Colony court, and remained in office until his death, June 29, 1685, and to his scrupulous, faithful, painstaking labors we are indebted for the good preservation of the archives of the Plymouth Colony. Mr. Morton wrote the First Beginnings and After Progress of the Church of Christ at Plymouth, in New England, which as preserved the early history of the first church established in New England; he also wrote many verses upon occasions of public interest, among which may be mentioned those on the death of his aunt, Mrs. Alice Bradford, which are published in the Massachusetts Historical Collection, Vol. III. 4th series; p. 460; but his greatest work, upon which his fame securely rests, is New England's Memorial, originally published at Cambridge in 1669, and frequently referred to as 'the cornerstone' of New England history; its accurate and full account of the transactions of the colony from 1620 to 1668 fully justify its claim to that title; it is a time-honored book, and has long been accounted an impartial history of the Pilgrim fathers; seven editions of the work have been published. Much of its value depended, no doubt, upon the author's access to the papers of Governor Bradford, as well as to the archives of the colony, but his education, manner of life, and intimate connection with the leading men in the arduous task recorded in his history, qualified him particularly for the work."

Nathaniel, eldest son, was the secretary of Plymouth Colony for more that forty years until his death in 1685. He accompanied his parents to Plymouth in 1623. He was made a Freeman in 1635; In 1645 he was chosen Secretary of the colony; He was the author of the New England Memorial, a record of prominent events within his personal knowledge, and many works of interest relating to the early history of Plymouth Colony.

Capt. Nathaniel Morton (1616 christened – 29 June 1685) Nathaniel Morton the eldest son of George Morton (1585–1624) and his wife Juliana Carpenter (1584–1665).

When his parents died, Nathaniel Morton and his siblings were taken in by their mother's sister and her husban, Governor William Bradford, and reared as their own.

Secretary of Plymouth Colony From December 1645 until his death, Morton was annually elected Secretary of Plymouth Colony, and most of the colony records are in his handwriting. His last entry in the town records is dated May 18th, 1685

Wrote a Book He wrote a book called "New England's Memorial", published in 1669, the first historical text published in the United States, and was first to publish a list of signers of the Mayflower Compact as well as an account of the first Thanksgiving

Note: He was 12 years old when his father died and he moved in with his uncle, Governor William Bradford, founder of Plymouth Colony

Note: He was adopted by his Uncle Gov. William BRADFORD.

Arrival to America On the ship "Little James." 1623 Plymouth, Plymouth Colony, British Colonial America

Reason This Information Is Correct New research shows the ship to be the "Little James" and not the "Anne." Both traveled together and the passenger lists were all listed under the larger ship "Anne." The Morton family was however on the Little James. See the research on Wikipedia for the ship "Anne." Most likely his parents moved from England to Holland to escape religious persecution before going to the New World.
