Nicholas was baptized on April 16,1672 at the Reformed Dutch Church, New York City. He was also known as Nicholas Brewer and Nicholas Berkhovern. He and his brother Abraham married sisters. They owned the Gowanus mill property in Brooklyn, having purchased it from the estate of their father. Nicholas eventually sold his interest in the Gowanus mill to his brother Abraham and moved to the Fordham Manor.
