About Noel Yvon Loftus Welman, DSO
WELMAN, NOEL YVON LOFTUS, Capt., was born at the Barracks,Mullingar, Ireland, 8 Oct. 1889, son o fLieut.-Colonel Herbert Loftus Welman, late Royal Irish Rifles, and Annie Harriet Welman (deceased). He was educated at Charterhouse Preparatory School, Godalming; at the Grammar School, Wellingborough, and the Royal Military College,Sandhurst, and joined the Duke of Cambridge's Own Middlesex Regt., in Feb.1909. He served in the European Warfrom 1914; was promoted to Captain in Dec. 1914, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette,1 Jan. 1915]: "Noel Yvon Loftus Welman, Capt., 1st Battn. The Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regt). For gallant conduct on the 30th Oct. at La Boutillerie, when the heaviest attack was launched by the enemy on the platoon whIch he commanded. Eleven of the enemy were killed on the parapet and two others Infront, LIeut. Welman accounting for three of the number himself." Capt. Welman was mentioned in Despatches 1 Jan. 1915, and was killed in action at Loos 25 Sept. 1915.
