About O. Abraham Staats

MIGRATION - Migrated from Harrison County, Virginia with family members between 1802 and 1811 to Knox County, Ohio where several family members remained. In 1824 he was in Montgomery County, Indiana where he was an original land owner in North Union Twp along Sugar Creek, which in the day was said to have been like a small river. Early history of Montgomery County, Indiana from early settlers records how they traveled by boat along the Ohio River, up the Wabash River, onto Sugar Creek, so it is possible they traveled from Ohio to Indiana by boat. He married "Rebeckey" Cox in Montgomery County, Indiana and had children. She received 40 acres of land which was located just north of that of Abraham from her father, Joseph Cox, estate, and she, too, is on the original land owner's map. Abraham was only surviving heir when final settlement administered of his father's, Elijah's, estate on May 5, 1831 in Indiana. Migrated to Linn County, Iowa about 1837 and he was involved in several deed transactions between 1858 & 1863 and homesteaded along the Cedar River. He appeared on the 1870 census in Linn County, Iowa and it's believed that he and family members traveled by boat on the Cedar River and Iowa River to where they settled in Louisa County, Iowa near the Iowa River.
