Abraham Jasper STAATS
OBITUARY - Wapello Tribune, Wapello, Iowa, Thursday, March 23, 1911:
A. J. Staats was born in Indiana, April 15, 1831, and departed this life at his home in Wapello, Iowa, March 20, 1911, aged 79 years, 11 months and 5 days. He was married to his now bereaved wife October 1, 1861. To this union were born ten children, eight boys and two girls, six boys having preceded the father in death, two boys and two girls remain with the mother to mourn their loss. Mr. Staats was converted and joined the Methodist church about twenty-two years ago, and soon after embraced the Holiness faith in which he maintained a constant christian life until removed by death. Had he survived six months longer he could have celebrated with his wife their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Thus for almost fifty years he proved himself a faithful, loving husband and father, a kind neighbor and an upright citizen. He enlisted in the Union army about the year 1864, and remained in the war till peace was declared, proving himself a faithful defender of his country as well as his home; and in this connection we can say of Mr. Staats, we believe he did the best he knew how in every department of life. The funeral services were conducted by Elder R. T. Finnell, of Hurdland, Knox county, Mo., who was his pastor for about seven years of his early christian life, at which time he spoke to Elder Finnell concerning his death, a promise from him to preach his funeral sermon. The services were conducted from his home in the presence of many neighbors and friends who had gathered to extend their sympathy to the sorrowing family. Interment was made in the Harrison cemetery.
