About PVT Paul Hazelton

Paul was a Private during the US Revolutionary War, DAR Ancestor #: A053518

In this branch of the family, the original surname of 'Hazeltine' became 'Hazelton.'

Sutton (pronounced 'suh-en'), Paul Hazelton's birthplace, is 40 miles southwest of Boston and 10 miles north of the Connecticut line. After its purchase from the Nipmuc Indians, it was first settled by three families in 1716, just 12 years before Paul Hazelton was born there.

Today, Sutton is a New England country town of just over 8,000 people in the heart of the Blackstone River Valley among the wooded hills of south central Massachusetts. Although it is within the economic orbit of the much larger city of Worcester (pop. 776,000; pronounced 'woo-stuh'), Sutton retains its rural flavor with a village green, a town hall, antique shops, and a website.

Townshend, Paul's last residence, is 100 miles northwest of Boston and 10 miles west of Vermont's Connecticut River boundary with New Hampshire.

From the record of the Superior Court session at Marlborough (MA) on the fifth Tuesday of August, 1786, we learn that on that day Mary Hazelton and Timothy Holbrook were sentenced to receive 25 stripes each. Although the court record does not show their crime, Paul's next action sheds some light on the subject. Paul Hazelton petitioned for divorce from his wife Mary, claiming that "Mary, his present wife for a considerable time hath been so unmindful of her duty to God and to your Petitioner her present husband as wholly to desart (sic) from his Bed and Board and hath lately been often guilty of the sin of adultry with one Timothy Holbrook ..."
