  • Birth: Richard Sparrow was born about 1604, based on his estimated date of marriage.
  • Death: He died on January 8, 1660/1, in Eastham.
  • Ship: Unknown, 1632
  • Life in England: Nothing is known about his life in England.
  • Life in New England: Richard Sparrow first appeared in Plymouth records on the March 25, 1633, tax list. He was also included in the list of freemen for that year. He and his family moved to Eastham by 1653. Sparrow served on 35 juries between 1640 and 1659. He was a Plymouth constable three years and a surveyor of highways for both Plymouth and Eastham. He was a tax collector in 1650. In an interesting 1650 court case, Richard Sparrow was presented by the court for concealing the theft by Thomas Shreve of corn from his barn, “uppon an ingagement so to doe unlesse called before authoritie.”
  • Family: Richard Sparrow married Pandora _____ by about 1629 and had one son. She died after March 27, 1661.

  • 1. Jonathan was born about 1629. He married (1) Rebecca Bangs on October 26, 1654, in Eastham and had six children. He married (2) Hannah (Prence) Mayo by 1671 and had three children. He married (3) Sarah (Lewis) Cobb on November 23, 1698, in Barnstable but had no children.

She was possibly daughter of John Bangs and Jane Chavis Bangs, and therefore a sister of Edward Bangs.

Richard Sparrow was born in 1605 in Kent England. He was married to Pandora BANGS in 1629. He immigrated in 1632 from England. Richard died on 8 Jan 1660/61 in Eastham, Barnstable, Mass. Burial in Cove Burying Ground

Our ancestor Capt. Jonathan SPARROW was his only child.

Pandora Bangs was born in 1605 in Panfield, Braintree, Essex, England. Her parents were Edward BANGS and Rebecca HOBART. Pandora died after Jan 1665 in Eastham, Plymouth Colony and is burried in Cove Burying Ground.

1644 – Adoption of Elizabeth Hopkins. Willed by her mother Ruth to be raised “as his own” until married or 19 years old. Transfer carried out by Myles Standish and Caleb Hopkins. On 5 October 1656, Captain Myles Standish brought suit against Richard Sparrow of Eastham, on behalf of Elizabeth Hopkins, charging that Sparrow had not performed the terms of an agreement concerning Elizabeth.

Here Resides The Dust of RICHARD SPARROW And His Wife PANDORA Who Came From Kent County England About 1633, And Settled In Plymouth. About 1650 They Came To Eastham And Settled Near This Place Where He Died January 8 1660.

Here Also Rests JONATHAN SPARROW Only Child Of Richard Together With His First Two Wives REBECCA BANGS, & HANNAH PRINCE. He Settled In The Part of Eastham Now East Orleans, Where After Filling Many Offices of Honor And Trust In Both Church and State He Died March 21, 1706. Aged 73 Years.

IN MEMORY OF These Early Settlers of Our Country We Their Descendants Have Erected This Tablet In This Centennial Year of Our American Independence A.D. 1876.
