Although only 17, succeeded in joining the Queensland Forces which served in the South African Campaign (generally referred to as the Boer War). Spent considerable time farming in Mexico until driven out by the revolutionaries. Forced to leave, he entered the construction business in Los Angeles.
Went to Mexico to handle the family cattle ranch. Married a (catholic) senorita and was subsequently disowned by the family.
