Sallie, as a young woman, liked to escape from the dullness of life at Queensholme to go to Brisbane and stay with one of her married North cousins. Another Sallie North, a grandaughter of one of Major North’s sons had married Fancis Villenueve Nicholson, and had a large family . Another daughter of a North son had married Fred Darvall, andl ived near the Nicholsons. It was while staying with the Nicholsons one time that Sallie met a young Scotsman, A. C. Grant, who was in town from up country on his way back to Scotland to recover from a severe attack of malaria, which the doctors in Brisbane could not cure. They had advised him to take a long sea voyage and spend several years in cold climate.

Sallie’s father, the Rev. Roger North, did not look with favor on this match. He wanted her to marry a young Irish lawyer named Loftus Cardew, who lived in Ipswich and who had been courting her. The Cardews were friends of the Norths. As a child, Jessy visited their home with Nelly North.

A.C. went back to Scotland, and finally to Switzerland’s St. Moritz, where he finally got rid of the Malaria. After two years, they were married in Ipswich, her father helping officiate. A.C. came up from Brisbane, but missed the train and had to be given a special engine by the Minister of Railways to get him to the wedding. Even that, he was late. Sallie had a host of bridesmaids. The maid of honor was Lady Norma Hay, a very special friend. A.C. at the time was working for Moreheads Ltd. a position he inherited when Uncle John (to Jessy) wnet back to London, and which he grew until he became the Managing Director of the firm.

The young couple had a little apartment on Wickham Terrace, which A.C. had rented in advance. A.C. had also engaged a maid. They lived there for two years and there was where Jessy was born. After Jessy was born, he purchased 13 acres out of town at a place called Enoggera (a native name) and built a four room and kitchen house, which was later enlarged as the family grew ot a thirteen room house, with quarters outside for the cook and groom. There, ten of the family was born. For years Sallie had a cook, nursery governess, nurse and groom. Transportation was poor. A. C. always rode a very fine stallion to and from the office. There was an Arab pony for the elder children and a Shetland pony (Snuffy) for the little ones. Sallie had a pony cart and horse, and a man to drive her.

When Sallie married A.C., they carried on the habit of morning and evening prayers.

Salle as a young girl was very gay and lightheartred. She was very attractive, about 5’ 3” tall, weighing under 100 lbs, with small hands and feet. Her features were regular, with saucy, tip-tilted nose, blue eyes, brown hair, a long head which lent itself to a simple style of hair arrangement. She parted her hair in the center of her forehead, combed it back into a loose knot at the back of her head. She had an engaging Irish accent as often as A.C. would say. It was this and her lightheartedness that capitavated the solemn young Scotsman.
