About Patrick Guthrie, Burgess of Aberdeen

PATRICK GUTHRIE was the second of the three sons of the Rt. Rev. John Guthrie, Bishop of Moray, 11th of Guthrie. His exact birth year is unknown.

The Aberdeen Register of Burgesses includes guild, trade, and honorary burgesses. On 3 Dec 1635, entries include: Mr William Clog, minister at Inverness; Mr Patrick Guthrie and Andrew Guthrie, sons of John, Bishop of Moray, and John Murray, servant to John, Bishop of Ross. G. (Guild)

The Bishop of Moray was a staunch royalist supporting King Charles I's plans to bring the Scottish church in line with the Church of England. He was out of touch with the religious sentiment in Scotland, resulting in the Glasgow assembly of Scottish churchmen deposing him from his bishopric on 11 Dec 1638. He refused to accept that disposition and continued to preach against the National Covenant until finally he was excommunicated by the Scottish church. He attempted to hold out in Spynie Palace, but it was captured on 16 July 1640. The Bishop was sent to Edinburgh and imprisoned in the Tolbooth.

On 13 May 1642, the Bishop's wife, conveyed by her two sons, Mr John Guthrie, parson of Duffus, and Mr. Patrick Guthrie, left Spynie with all of her furnishings and good, passing through Old Aberdeen on the way to Angus to settle at Guthrie. (Troubles and Memorable Transactions)

The Furnishing of Spynie Palace documents the inventory of furnishing and goods of the Guthrie family members, including Patrick Guthrie.

Patrick's departure from Spynie palace in 1642 is the last entry found for him. Whether he was married or had any children is unknown. There would have been no surviving male issue. Patrick and any sons would have died prior to 1649 for at the time of his death, the Rt. Rev. John Guthrie, 11th of Guthrie, former Bishop of Moray, had no surviving sons to inherit the lands and title of Guthrie.

Instead, John Guthrie's eldest surviving daughter, Bethia, served as heiress, with the lands and title went to her husband, Francis Guthrie, 3rd of Gaigie, who was noted upon their marriage in 1647 as the bishop's 'adopted son' as he required a legal heir.

Note that the Patrick Guthrie who was married to Agnes Aykin was a resident of Canongate in Edinburgh, and had 3 children born/baptized there between 1638 and 1643.

During the year 1635, the bishop's two younger sons, Patrick and Andrew were living in Aberdeen and selected as burgesses there. Patrick was at Spynie Palace in 1642, in the far north of Scotland. The DOD currently listed as 1633 in Lothian is clearly an error as it is documented he was alive in 1642.
