Peter was born at "Dulwich" Glennies Creek, being the youngest son and

child of a family of 12 children. He was educated in the Glennies

Creek area and left school at an early age.He worked on farming

properties and then became a teamster with his bullock team carting

goods from the Port of Morpeth to the northern parts of New South

Wales and to St George in Queensland. He disposed of this business

after 10 years and carried out farming and fence contracting in the

Singleton District. He married Elizabeth Cann the daughter of a well

known pioneering family. Elizabeth's brother was a builder by trade

and together they built a home on part of the property left to him by

his father,Abraham. The home built on the banks of the Goorangoola

Creek can still be seen.It was built of timber slabs with an iron roof

but in recent years has fallen into disrepair and is not occupied.

Peter was known throughout the district as one of the best broadaxemen

and his work as a fencing contractor was widely known. He is credited

with the erection of the BIG POST on the fence at the intersection of

Bridgman Road and Goorangoola Road and although the post has been

replaced the locality is still known as the BIG POST. It is believed

Peter lived in the home on Goorangoola Creek where all the children

were born and he carried out farming and fence contracting. He later

moved to Dunolly and then again to 77 High Street,Singleton where he

spent the rest of his life.On the 14th April 1937,Peter and Elizabeth

celebrated their Diamond Wedding in the company of many friends and

relatives. Two years later at the age of 83,just to prove age was not

a bar he sheared a sheep owned by his son-in-law.He said at the time

his best tally for a day whilst he was a shearer with a hand blade and

machine was 107 and he preferred to take pains with his work to ensure

the job was well done.He travelled many miles both on horseback and by

bicycle to shearing sheds within the district. His death in his 86th

year removed one of the grand old pioneering men from the District

where he had resided and worked all his life as a farmer, teamster,

shearer,fencing contracter and carpenter.þÿ
